Meant For Harm Used For Good

“What was meant for harm God used for good” When we look at the circumstances of our lives sometimes it is hard to see beyond the immediate and the emotions that surround us to what God is up to and how he can take those circumstances as negative as they are and use them for good. The following story is a story of God’s amazing love and his ability to take what was meant for harm and the negative circumstances of life and make something beautiful out of it. It was only a short time ago when our life was turned upside down and we found ourselves a few weeks later sitting in a room with 20-30 other Parents Of Recovering Teens (PORT).

It was a place filled with despair and seeming hopelessness as we went around the circle and listened to the similar stories and circumstances that brought us all together; our drug and alcohol addicted children.

“Hi, my name is Darrell and I am the parent of a recovering teen.” Words I never dreamed I would have to say and yet today thank God for those words. I am not alone in these feelings...

  • “Hi, my name is Robin and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m confused.”

  •  “Hi, my name is Dave and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m angry.”

  • “Hi, my name is Nancy and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m hurt.”

  • "Hi, my name is David and I am in recovery and I am also the parent of a recovering teen. I’m lost.”

  • “Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am in recovery and i am also the parent of a recovering teen. I’m hopeless.”

  •  “Hi, my name is Andrea and I am in 18 years of my own recovery and I am also the parent of a recovering teen. I’m tired.”

  • “Hi, my name is Tony and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m frustrated.”

  • “Hi, my name is Mary ann and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m uncertain.”

  • “Hi, My name is Mark and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m determined.”

  • “Hi, My name is Chrissy and I am the parent of a recovering teen. I’m ashamed.”

You need to know right up front that our joy in what God has done is not found in the salvation and redemption of our children. Many of them are still struggling with drugs and a life of destruction. And many of us still experience some of the emotions listed above. However, when my wife and I found ourselves at PORT we found our selves in a mission field. The names above were the start of an organic church that formed at a Braum’s restaurant with the goal of trying to discover “who this higher power is and his relevance to our lives.” What was meant for harm in our children’s lives was turned to good when we discovered that God was not just in the business of transforming children’s lives but also the lives of their parents. Because of the circumstances that brought us together and the fact that we had missionary eyes the story has changed...

  •  “Hi, my name is Andrea and I am now a child of God. My past has been forgiven. I was Baptized on November 15, 2010 in Nancy’s hot tub. I am dead to sin and alive in Christ.”

  • “Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am now a child of God. My past has been forgiven. I was Baptized on April 25, 2011 in Nancy’s hot tub. I am dead to sin and alive in Christ.”

  • “Hi, my name is David and I am now a child of God. My past has been forgiven. I was Baptized on July 17, 2011 in the swimming pool at my sisters apartment. I am dead to sin and alive in Christ.”

  • “Hi, my name is Hayley and I am Andrea’s daughter and now a child of God. My past has been forgiven. I was Baptized on September 11, 2011 in Nancy’s hot tub. I am dead to sin and alive in Christ. I thank God for transformation in my mom’s life and for this group because it opened the door for my life to be transformed as well.”

“What was meant for harm has been used for good and God’s glory and our lives have been redeemed thanks to the circumstances that also bring us pain.”

“Hi, my name is Darrell and I am the proud parent of a recovering teen, and I thank God for taking the circumstances of our lives that has brought us together and for making something beautiful out of the mess.”

Connections 12 step Organic Church was birthed in pain and we thank God for that pain that brought us together and the lives that have been redeemed along the way. Please keep our children in your prayers as it is our hope, belief and prayer that they too will experience the transforming love and grace of Jesus Christ.
